The Apex Legends anti-cheat team has published a fresh report: nearly 6,000 hardware bans issued since April 2026 across PC and console. Respawn frames it as a campaign against “malicious bad actors” — and it’s the second high-profile report in a month, following a separate July breakdown of auto-aim manipulation detection on controllers.
What is actually happening
A HWID ban blocks the hardware, not the account: a new account on the same PC or console goes down right after it. Six thousand of these in three months is a notable figure — Respawn hands out hardware blocks not for a first detection but for recidivism, when a player returns on a fresh account after a regular ban.
The report and surrounding publications paint the picture:
- The primary target is repeat offenders and boost/account sellers running software at scale.
- Consoles are in the blast radius. A separate front covers Cronus/XIM-style devices and auto-aim manipulation — Respawn explicitly confirmed detection of such devices in the anti-cheat team’s July update.
- Report cadence has increased. The anti-cheat team has moved to regular public updates — a sign this is a systematic campaign, not a one-off press moment.
Context: EAC plus machine learning
Apex runs Easy Anti-Cheat alongside Respawn’s own server-side systems: statistical models catch anomalous accuracy and tracking patterns, while a human team processes reports and flags hardware. That combination is exactly what produces hardware bans: EAC watches the client, the server watches behavior, and the team links accounts together.
What this means for players using software
The report is a useful snapshot of what actually gets people banned:
- Only a spoofer cures a HWID ban. Once hardware is flagged, a new account without identifier spoofing is money thrown away. See our HWID spoofer guide for how to choose one.
- Public software and boosting operations are the main target. Private solutions with small user bases get caught by statistical detection far less often — current options are collected in our Apex Legends cheats catalog.
- Ranked lobbies are under the microscope. Anomalous ranked statistics get priority processing — if you play with software, keep your numbers within human limits: staying subtle beats stacking frags.
- Check software status on the cheat updates page before every session — detections change after each anti-cheat update.
Bottom line
Respawn is methodically turning its cheater fight into a public campaign: regular reports, growing numbers, controller-device detection. For Apex it’s primarily a “we’re on it” signal to the community. For software users it’s a reminder that the era of consequence-free public cheats in Apex is over — and the price of a mistake is now your hardware, not your account.
