How to Enable Virtualization in BIOS (SVM, VT-X, VT-D)
Step-by-step guide to enable hardware virtualization in BIOS for Intel (VT-x, VT-d) and AMD (SVM) processors.
Some software requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in BIOS. Intel calls this technology VT-x (Intel Virtualization Technology) and VT-d, while AMD calls it SVM (Secure Virtual Machine). By default, virtualization may be disabled.
Step 1: Check if Virtualization is Enabled
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Performance tab → CPU.
- In the bottom-right corner, look for "Virtualization".
- If it says "Enabled" — you're all set, no further steps needed.
- If it says "Disabled" — proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Enter BIOS
- Restart your computer.
- Immediately after powering on, press the BIOS entry key. Usually it's Del, F2, F10, or Esc (depends on your motherboard manufacturer).
- If that doesn't work — try via Windows: Settings → Update & Security → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now, then select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → UEFI Firmware Settings.
Step 3: Find the Virtualization Setting
The setting location depends on your BIOS manufacturer. Look in sections like Advanced, CPU Configuration, Overclocking, or Security.
For Intel
- Find Intel Virtualization Technology (or Intel VT-x)
- Set it to Enabled
- If Intel VT-d is available — enable it too
For AMD
- Find SVM Mode (or Secure Virtual Machine)
- Set it to Enabled
Step 4: Save and Reboot
- Press F10 to save settings (Save & Exit).
- Confirm the save.
- Your computer will reboot with virtualization enabled.
Step 5: Verify the Result
After Windows boots, open Task Manager → Performance → CPU again and verify that "Virtualization" now shows "Enabled".
