Arma Reforger 1.8 adds Far Hide concealment and role perks

Arma Reforger's 1.8 major update introduces the Far Hide system for distant prone players, specialist role bonuses, new smoke options and stronger admin tools.

Arma Reforger has received its 1.8 major update, and the headline change is a system called Far Hide — a first pass at making prone players in grass actually hard to see from long range. The patch also hands out perks to squad specialist roles, cleans up field fortification, expands smoke options and adds a rank penalty for dying. Bohemia also confirmed the game is now on the Microsoft Store with Xbox Play Anywhere support.

Far Hide fixes the vanishing grass problem

Large-scale shooters share the same flaw: vegetation stops rendering at distance, so a man lying flat in a field reads as a clean silhouette on bare terrain to a sniper 750 meters away. Dropping graphics settings amplified the effect — less grass on screen meant easier targets.

Far Hide conceals distant characters across grass-covered areas, restoring the point of going prone. Bohemia describes it as a first implementation with further tuning likely, and states the goal plainly: remove the edge players got from vegetation that simply wasn’t there at range or on low settings.

Concealment now matters against AI too. Grass and camo nets obstruct AI vision, so breaking line of sight with vegetation is a real tactic and bots have a harder time spotting and tracking you.

Specialist roles finally pay off

Several roles now perform their own jobs faster:

  • Medics inspect and treat casualties quicker and can load wounded into vehicles;
  • Logistics personnel load and unload supplies faster;
  • Vehicle crews repair, rearm and refuel more quickly;
  • Engineers build structures and deployables faster.

Fortification also got a quality-of-life pass: you no longer dump an entire pile of sandbags on the ground to start a build — one is enough, the rest is pulled from your inventory. Razor wire is now player-deployable, useful for sealing approaches or funneling infantry into an ambush, and the PKMN can be mounted on the 6T5 tripod with or without the 1P29 optic.

Smoke, gestures and odds and ends

New tactical gesture animations give squads silent communication options, while loiter animations let you sit, do pushups or have a smoke between fights. The US Army gains underbarrel smoke grenades in several colors, and mortar smoke rounds now last longer, making screening an assault more viable.

Elsewhere: running around bootless damages your feet and can make you stumble; dying costs 30 rank progression points, though friendly-fire victims are spared and death no longer flags a player as Renegade. Admins can teleport their camera straight to a player and promote or demote through the Player List.

What this means for players using software

Start with the boring part. This is a major version bump, not a hotfix — a rebuilt client means shifted offsets and signatures, so anything compiled against pre-1.8 builds should be treated as dead until the developer confirms compatibility. Don’t launch yesterday’s build hoping for the best, and wait for a proper rebuild instead: an outdated one usually ends in blank overlays or a crash during server join, and a crash in the logs is the kind of thing an admin may well spot. Check the software update statuses before you queue.

Now the interesting part. Far Hide undercuts what community experience suggests was a fairly common grey-area habit in Reforger: cranking settings to the floor so distant grass never renders. If part of your long-range advantage came from a config file, it’s gone, and ESP has to carry that load instead. The flip side matters more — the developers’ intent is that a legitimate player no longer picks out a prone body in a field at 750 meters, so acting on that information is more conspicuous than it was last week. Shoot at contacts that could plausibly have been spotted with your own eyes.

AI vision is the second behavioral change. Bots lose you behind grass and camo nets, which means an aimbot snapping onto a target that has no line of sight to you reads as obviously wrong to anyone watching the killfeed or a recording.

Third, admin tooling. Camera teleport to any player is effectively instant spectating on report, and on Reforger’s community servers a large share of anti-cheat work appears to be handled by admins by hand. Practical takeaways: smooth aim with snap limits instead of instant flicks, ESP without full-wall highlights at close range, and a separate account plus HWID spoofer if you’ve already collected a ban somewhere.
