CS2: bomb damage preview and a blast that eats smokes

The 20 July Counter-Strike 2 update refines the reworked C4 explosion: the damage preview appears as soon as the bomb becomes audible, and the blast now interacts with smokes and molotovs.

Valve keeps refining the most contested mechanic of Counter-Strike 2’s fifth season — the reworked bomb explosion. The 20 July update adds two changes that directly affect how post-plant rounds play out.

What changed

  • The damage preview is revealed once the bomb becomes audible. Previously the “how much of you survives detonation” indicator showed up later; now it opens the moment the C4 becomes audible. That turns guesswork into readable information: you can see whether your current position survives to the end of the timer.
  • The explosion interacts with smoke and fire. Detonation now affects smoke grenade clouds and molotov/incendiary fire. A post-plant built on a smoke over the bomb behaves differently than it did a week ago.

The same update pulled Fachwerk, Boulder and Debris to their latest Community Workshop versions, and added a Workshop maps section plus a Community Servers shortcut to the Play menu for Counter-Strike in Steam China.

Context: the season the bomb became a weapon

Recall how this started. In Season 5 Valve fully reworked C4 damage: the shockwave now expands from the epicentre, dissipates around corners and does not pass through walls, instead of being applied instantly across an area. Damage values are precomputed and baked into the compiled map. Later updates removed the guaranteed map-wide point of damage and fixed the calculation near area boundaries.

The result: within a month the bomb went from a timer to a full combat element — and the cost of bad positioning on a retake moved with it.

Builds and statuses are on the CS2 page, and the software breakdown is in our CS2 cheats guide.

What this means for players running software

  1. Valve editing maps means Valve editing data. Workshop map updates and the damage values baked into them change the contents of the compiled BSPs. Builds that read geometry for visibility checks often need an update after patches like this.
  2. The information edge is being devalued. The bomb damage preview is something the game now shows everyone honestly. The more the game hands over on its own, the fewer reasons remain to risk an account for the same data.
  3. Post-plant needs relearning. The blast interacting with smoke and fire breaks memorised setups. Play the old positions and damage will arrive from places it never used to.
  4. VAC does not ban instantly. Sanctions in CS2 come in delayed waves, and Overwatch and reports have not gone anywhere. A quiet week after a patch is not an indicator.

Bottom line

A small update that continues a large arc: Valve has spent a whole season turning C4 into a tactical instrument while handing players more and more information about it. For anyone playing with software, the second part matters more — some of the edge is now given away for free.
