Dead by Daylight’s Steam version began a Denuvo Anti-Cheat trial on September 2. On first launch, players are prompted to install the component, which is required to play while the evaluation is active. Since this changes the game’s security environment rather than its balance, third-party software compatibility is the immediate concern.
A Steam-only test, not new DRM
The Denuvo name can refer to different products, so the distinction in the announcement matters. Dead by Daylight is testing Denuvo Anti-Cheat, which is intended to identify unfair in-game behavior. The trial does not include Denuvo’s anti-piracy technology or add a new content-protection system.
The test has several defined limits:
- it applies exclusively to the Steam version;
- cross-play is expected to continue without disruption;
- Steam Deck and Proton compatibility has been tested and will remain supported;
- the developer is evaluating performance and compatibility alongside the provider’s anti-cheat capabilities.
This is presented as a temporary provider trial, not confirmation that Denuvo will become the game’s permanent solution. The announcement does not provide an end date, leaving players dependent on later updates for the exact schedule.
What Steam players will encounter
On the first launch during the trial, Dead by Daylight will display a prompt to install Denuvo Anti-Cheat. Installation is not optional for anyone who wants to enter the game while the test is running.
Player reporting remains part of the evaluation. Reports should still use the in-game “Hacking/Exploiting” category, with detailed notes about behavior such as wallhacks, abnormal speed or teleportation. The team is also collecting feedback about the provider itself, including how the game performs under the additional component.
Once the trial ends, Denuvo Anti-Cheat is supposed to deactivate automatically and stop running. A separate support guide is available for removing files that may remain afterward, although the announcement does not suggest that every player will need to perform manual cleanup.
Why software status must be checked again
Adding another anti-cheat provider can alter the launch sequence and the way the game observes processes, overlays or tools that interact with memory. A third-party build that launched successfully before the trial therefore cannot be assumed to behave the same way afterward. Possible compatibility problems range from a failed injection or missing features to crashes and a changed detection risk.
The Steam-only scope narrows the immediate issue but does not remove it. “Cross-play is unaffected” describes access to shared matchmaking; it is not a compatibility guarantee for aimbots, ESP or other tools. Likewise, official Steam Deck and Proton support only covers the game and anti-cheat combination, not unverified software running alongside it.
No technical detection details were published, so claims about specific methods being safe or unsafe would be speculation. The practical signal is simply that the runtime environment has changed and existing software needs fresh validation.
What this means for players using software
Treat every pre-trial build as unconfirmed until its maintainer has tested it with the new Steam client. Check the software update statuses before launching, and avoid repeatedly trying an outdated build on a primary account when no current status is available. Waiting through the opening stage of the trial is more sensible than assuming that a successful launch means full compatibility.
Do not plan around disabling Denuvo Anti-Cheat: without installing the component, players cannot continue playing during the trial. The announcement also says nothing about new HWID enforcement, which means the trial alone is not evidence that an HWID spoofer has become necessary.
The Dead by Daylight software catalog for current builds is the relevant starting point, but product status should still be checked before each session. When the trial ends, automatic anti-cheat deactivation should not be treated as automatic confirmation that every older tool is compatible again.
