SAND Update #5: BattlEye hardening and artifact rebalance

SAND: Raiders of Sophie shipped Update #5 on 24 July with BattlEye anti-cheat improvements, rendering and terrain streaming optimisation, and an artifact rebalance buffing the spherical shield.

SAND: Raiders of Sophie released Update #5 on 24 July. The changelog covers technical optimisation, an artifact rebalance and — most relevant to anyone running private software — another round of BattlEye anti-cheat improvements.

What changed

Anti-cheat. The developers call out BattlEye improvements as their own line item. This is the second consecutive iteration: Update #4 on 14 July stated explicitly that the studio was strengthening the anti-cheat and adding new protections against cheaters. Two patches in a row with the same wording is not a coincidence — it is a stated priority.

Performance. Rendering and landscape streaming have been optimised, and terrain now loads more smoothly. For a game built around large open spaces that is a noticeable improvement: fewer pop-ins while moving and fewer dips during fast traversal.

Artifact rebalance. The spherical shield has been reworked — it is now impenetrable from both sides, and its health pool was raised from 15,000. Previously the shield could be used asymmetrically, firing out from inside; that is now closed, turning the artifact into pure cover rather than a one-way firing port.

Why two anti-cheat passes in a row is a signal

BattlEye is a driver-level anti-cheat that loads before the game starts and runs at kernel level. It looks for injection, suspicious handles to the process and real-time memory modification. When a studio announces hardening twice inside ten days, it usually means an expanded detection set and preparation for a ban wave rather than a cosmetic config tweak.

The classic pattern: detections quietly gather data first, and the ban wave arrives later — days or weeks after the patch.

What this means for players using software

  • Waiting is the minimum, not a suggestion. Two consecutive updates hardening the anti-cheat is about as clear a signal as this industry produces. A single day off may not be enough.
  • Check solution status before every session. Current state is on the SAND: Raiders of Sophie page and in the updates section.
  • BattlEye loads before the game does. Startup order is critical here, and any “I will launch the game first and try afterwards” approach heads straight into a detection. Read your solution’s instructions in full, not diagonally.
  • A HWID spoofer is mandatory. BattlEye collects hardware identifiers, so a ban does not stop at the account. Without a spoofer, one incident closes the game on that machine.
  • Extraction shooter means losing loot. A ban here wipes not a match’s progress but the entire accumulated inventory. Keep expensive artifacts out of raids in the days after a patch.

Bottom line

Update #5 is a good patch on its merits: terrain streams more smoothly and the shield now behaves predictably. But the headline item is the anti-cheat, and it is the second pass in a row. The sensible play for the coming days is to run clean, watch the status, and carry nothing into a raid you would mind losing.
