Update 3.8.1 is one of the most substantial of the season: Rare shipped a custom mode builder, reworked two key PvP elements and closed a long-standing hole in private sessions along the way.
Custom Seas: build your own modes
The headline feature is Custom Seas — a tool for building your own game modes. The stated use cases are challenges for friends, cinematic capture and generally non-standard experiences outside the regular Sea. Alongside it came the Pirate Practice Preset, an official preset for quick practice runs through World Events and naval battles, plus the ability to emote in Free Camera mode.
Join code protection — small but important
When entering a code to access a custom session, the digits are now hidden. The code can be revealed and hidden again at any point while you type.
It reads as a detail but it closes a specific scenario: the code used to leak through a stream or over someone’s shoulder, and anyone could then walk into a private session. In a game where streamers and tournament organisers lean heavily on custom sessions, that matters.
What changed in combat
- Bone Callers now scale with ship size. Thrown at another crew’s ship, each summons one skeleton on a Sloop, two on a Brigantine and three on a Galleon. Defensive use — on your own ship or on land — is unchanged and still summons three every time.
- Last Ship Standing: the bounds keep shrinking. The final area used to stay static in the closing phases. Now, at the 25-minute mark, it slowly shrinks over 10 minutes, forcing the fight to a close.
- Lost loot is findable again. Jettisoned resource barrels, Storage Crates and Emissary Flags released from sunken ships now have seagulls circling above them — a live marker mid-fight.
- Winners get a grace period. The portal after a Last Ship Standing win no longer appears immediately; it waits until the crew sails away.
- Shots into water now splash — visually and audibly.
Builds and statuses are on the Sea of Thieves page, and the software breakdown is in our Sea of Thieves cheats guide.
What this means for players running software
- Seagulls over loot are a free loot ESP. The game itself now highlights dropped resources during a fight. The more the client hands over, the fewer reasons remain to risk an account for the same information.
- Hidden join codes change how much you can trust a custom. Private sessions are genuinely private now — which also means walking into someone else’s custom off a glimpsed code no longer works.
- The shrinking zone breaks old tactics. Sitting out the Last Ship Standing endgame is over: from the 25-minute mark, no position is safe by default.
- The patch touches combat logic — expect build updates. The Bone Caller rebalance and the zone changes affect both server and client logic; check compatibility before your first session.
Bottom line
3.8.1 is a rare patch that carries a headline feature, a targeted security fix and a PvP rebalance at once. Custom Seas will get the most discussion, but the most practical changes here are the hidden session code and the seagulls over loot.
