Sea of Thieves Season 21 adds Custom Seas Layouts

Sea of Thieves Season 21 introduces reusable Custom Seas Layouts and a busy event calendar, with practical implications for third-party software users.

Sea of Thieves Season 21 went live on September 17 with a schedule-driven format rather than a set of headline acts. Its most substantial mechanical addition is Layouts for Custom Seas, while the rest of the opening update revolves around a refreshed pass, cosmetics and limited-time activities. Later monthly drops will concentrate on fixes, more events and further Custom Seas refinements.

Layouts make custom sessions reusable

Custom Seas hosts can now capture the state of a session, including spawned objects and their positions. Loading that Layout restores the prepared environment instead of requiring the host to rebuild it before every gathering.

Multiple Layouts can be stored for the same location. That should make the feature more practical for repeatable scenarios such as organised fights, filming sessions or community-made challenges. It is the clearest systems-level change in the September update, although the developer also says the Custom Seas toolset will continue to evolve during and beyond Season 21.

No additional future tools were identified in the announcement. For the second and third months, the stated plan is broader: bug fixes, extra events and incremental improvements rather than another major seasonal act.

A season built around the live calendar

Recurring Fight Nights and Emissaries of Fortune remain part of the weekly rotation, offering regular progression boosts tied to factions and Trading Companies. The wider calendar includes Bilge Rats Weekenders, a Season 21 Community Weekend and another run of Last Ship Standing: Sloops. Full rules and timings for those activities will be announced separately.

The opening celebration is Talk Like a Pirate Day, running from September 17 through September 22. A new Parley Pennant lets a crew signal that it wants to communicate. Players who use it successfully three times during the event receive the Parley Proficiency Sails.

A cross-platform free-play period also runs from September 17 to September 21, letting console players join without their usual paid multiplayer membership. The event is accompanied by returning Pretty Polly Sails and the debut of the matching Pretty Polly Hull in the Emporium. Season 21 also refreshes the regular pass, adds an optional Premium Tier and expands the selection of Outpost cosmetics.

What this means for players using software

The announcement does not describe an anti-cheat upgrade, a new detection method or a change to enforcement. That is useful context, but it should not be read as confirmation that existing tools remain compatible. Routine client patches can still move offsets, invalidate signatures or break injection and overlay behaviour even when the public notes focus on events.

Before joining a regular session:

  • review the software update status after installing the new client build;
  • avoid loading an older release solely because no anti-cheat work was disclosed;
  • recheck entity labels and item filters if a tool reads spawned world objects, particularly around saved Custom Seas Layouts;
  • do not alter an HWID-spoofer setup based on this announcement alone, as it provides no evidence of an anti-cheat or hardware-identification change.

The Sea of Thieves software catalog is the relevant place to compare available builds, but each product still needs an explicit current-version status. Custom Seas should not be treated as a guaranteed testing sandbox either: the developer has made no claim that third-party software is handled differently there.
