🔧 Facepunch shipped one of Rust’s most significant technical updates in years — “Built Different.” The headline: the studio rebuilt the player character models from scratch after nearly a decade. In their own words, “the only real way forward was to rip it out and rebuild it properly.” The update is live now.
What changed in the models
This isn’t a cosmetic touch-up — it’s a full rebuild of the character rig and visuals:
- New shaders and hairstyles, plus extra head options — down to eyelashes.
- Re-rigged clothing — items now sit and animate correctly on the body.
- Reworked animation sub-systems — movement looks noticeably more lifelike.
For now your appearance is assigned at random (a random seed): some players get a reasonable character, others get a “truly cursed” one. Facepunch has confirmed full player customization is coming in future patches — this update lays the groundwork.
What else landed
Beyond the models, “Built Different” adds combat content:
- Ballistic armor set — top-tier protection that isn’t craftable: you have to find it.
- Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) — better protection than standard clothing.
- M16A2 rifle — the classic now drops from locked crates.
A full breakdown is in PCGamesN’s coverage; the official patch notes are on the Steam update page.
What it means for players running software
Any rebuild of the character engine is a sensitive moment for private software: models, skeletons and — crucially for ESP — bone structures all change.
- Don’t rush your first session after the patch. New skeletons can break bone and box rendering in ESP/aimbot until your provider rebuilds offsets against the fresh build.
- Run an HWID spoofer before logging in — basic hygiene after any major update. Which one to pick is in our 2026 HWID spoofer guide.
- Check the statuses in our working Rust cheats list — we flag which private builds are already adapted to the new client and which are paused.
New bone models usually require an update to ESP and aim logic specifically — recoil scripts and radar suffer less. How each of those is configured is in our Rust cheats breakdown: ESP, aimbot, no-recoil.
Update contents are per Facepunch’s official Steam announcement. How private software behaves after a patch depends on the provider — check the status before your session.
