Rust’s October 1, 2026 update makes animals part of the island’s economy rather than simple roaming targets. Cattle and sheep can now be captured, bred, harvested for resources, and sold, while a biofuel machine creates a use for unwanted meat. The patch also changes NPC navigation and introduces several smaller creatures.
Livestock is more than environmental decoration
Players can capture wild cattle and sheep through several methods and bring them into purpose-built farms. With the new navigation system active, NPCs can move inside player structures and respond to doors being opened or closed. Dedicated animal fences and gates have also been added for building enclosures.
Both species have needs and inheritable traits. Breeding can produce animals with more desirable genetics, although the system does not follow exactly the same rules as plant genetics. Existing farming routines therefore cannot simply be copied without adjustment.
The available resources depend on the animal:
- cattle produce milk;
- sheep provide wool;
- both generate dung;
- either species can be harvested for meat, bones, and leather.
Mature livestock can be taken to the Stable and sold to a new vendor. The vendor offers various resources, with the randomized reward based on the animal’s genetic quality. A player may reject the initial offer and request two alternatives, after which the vendor imposes a 15-minute delay before considering that animal again.
New processing loops for milk and organic matter
Fresh milk works as a consumable, but refrigeration opens another option. After four hours, it can be skimmed into separate skimmed milk and cream items. Milk is used to extend tea effects in crafting recipes, while cream can increase their strength.
Wool has its own trading loop at the Stable. As with livestock, the vendor can provide up to three offers. The reward takes the delivered quantity into account, with 400 units being the maximum amount evaluated in one transaction.
The Biofuel Generator turns raw or spoiled meat into low grade fuel. It is not fully automatic: players must stir the contents and return roughly 30 minutes later to stir them again. An IO connection can provide a remote notification, and organic materials with greater calorific value yield more fuel.
More NPCs without unrestricted server cost
Adding farm animals and wildlife could have created a significant simulation burden, so NPC processing now operates within a fixed time budget per frame. When the budget is exceeded, calculations are spread across additional frames. The intended trade-off is slower NPC reactions rather than a direct, unlimited loss of server frame rate.
The developer also reports that the new navigation system has at least doubled in performance since the previous patch. Frogs, rabbits, squirrels, sea turtles, crabs, and jellyfish use tightly limited behavior systems and currently serve mostly as ambient life. These limits apply to both server and client resource use.
What this means for players using software
The announcement does not identify an anti-cheat update, so this patch alone is not evidence that a different HWID spoofer is required. It is still a meaningful client update, however, and software that relies on offsets, signatures, or entity lists may need maintenance before it works correctly again.
Entity-based features deserve particular attention. ESP configured to show every NPC may suddenly produce excessive labels, while older filters may group cattle, sheep, or critters under incorrect categories. Target-selection logic can face a similar classification problem even if the overlay itself launches normally. Players should check the software update status page before a session instead of assuming that a pre-patch build remains compatible.
Updated options can be found in the Rust software catalog for the current game build. A listing should not be treated as proof of post-patch compatibility; the individual product status remains the relevant signal.
