Late on May 18, Grinding Gear Games posted a teaser for two Unique Items joining the upcoming Return of the Ancients expansion (live May 29, 2026). One is brand new. The other is the single most nostalgic item PoE 1 veterans could have asked for.
Auspex — the new one
GGG aren’t showing stats yet (tradition — that lands in the pre-launch streams), but the name and accompanying video hint at a support role: auspex is Latin for “diviner” or “augur.” Expect something around event-roll mechanics — modifying zone-event odds, extra trigger lines, or revealing hidden mob affixes. Concrete numbers will likely drop on the May 26–28 pre-launch streams.
Facebreaker — the legend returns
The bigger news is the second item. Facebreaker is making a comeback in Path of Exile 2 as “a beloved Path of Exile classic.” In PoE 1 these gloves single-handedly turned unarmed punching from a junk damage source into a primary physical damage carrier. Cyclone, Sunder, Ground Slam — entire build schools grew around one item.
GGG’s official line for the reveal:
“Unleash a relentless barrage of punches to crush your enemies… and shatter their minds.”
“Shatter their minds” is a hint that PoE 2’s Facebreaker may extend beyond physical damage into the new Sanity / Spirit resource GGG have been leaning on in Sekhema floors. The old single-axis punch build gets a second layer: pressure on the enemy’s mana/spirit pool.
Why this matters for the meta
During early access, unarmed builds in PoE 2 were, to put it gently, uncompetitive. Skills like Boneshatter and Hand of Wisdom wanted unarmed setups, but without a foundation glove they sat 30–40% behind mainstream meta.
With Facebreaker back:
- A real foundation lands for punch / slam / strike-without-weapon mechanics
- A window opens for a new archetype class — “mystic monk” / unarmed warrior
- The “PoE 2 is just PoE 1 with better graphics” running joke gets a concrete confirmation: legendary items keep migrating across
What this means for cheat users
PoE 2 is soft-PvE with web-based trade, no kernel-level anti-cheat. The real risks for tool users here aren’t “banned for wallhack” — they’re:
- Trade-detection — flip bots, auto-pickup and stat filters get caught via pattern analysis, not client-side scans
- The “1 item per ritual” baseline — GGG steadily strengthen server-side checks on drop-to-pickup timing, especially around new league launches
Uniques like Facebreaker will almost certainly become farm-bot targets on launch day (thousands listed within hours, week-one prices crashing by 10x). If you’re running trade tooling, watch May 29: peak load on trade servers = peak activity from GGG’s detection scripts.
The PoE 2 catalog on IVSOFTE updates as new patch-aware builds drop.
Bottom line
Two Uniques 11 days out from Return of the Ancients is standard GGG pre-launch teaser cadence. Auspex remains a mystery; Facebreaker is the bigger statement — PoE 1’s most iconic glove returns to PoE 2 at full strength. Expect unarmed builds to be one of the most-discussed league-start archetypes on May 29.
